What are we solving?

Uno de los cenotes en los que nos enfocamos es Yaal Utzil, que en maya significa "buen hijo". Después de nadar en sus aguas y hablar con la comunidad local, nos impactó la magnitud de la contaminación y lo naturalizada que se ha vuelto.

One of the cenotes we are focusing on is Yaal Utzil, which translates to "good son" in Mayan. After swimming in its waters and talking with the local community, we were struck by the extent of the pollution and how accepted it has become.

La gente es consciente del problema, pero poco se ha hecho para resolverlo — no por falta de voluntad, sino porque carecen de los recursos necesarios para generar un cambio.

The people are aware of the issue, yet little has been done to address it — not due to a lack of desire, but because they lack the resources needed to make a change.

Los cenotes son mucho más que sitios sagrados; son componentes esenciales del Gran Acuífero Maya, la principal fuente de agua dulce para más de 2 millones de personas. Son el sustento de las comunidades mayas rurales, muchas de las cuales dependen en gran medida del turismo en cenotes para sobrevivir.

Cenotes are much more than sacred sites; they are essential components of the Great Mayan Aquifer, the main source of freshwater for over 2 million people. They are the lifeblood of rural Maya communities, many of which rely heavily on cenote tourism for their survival.

Lamentablemente, esto genera un ciclo preocupante en el que los mismos turistas que apoyan a estas comunidades pueden dañar inadvertidamente los cenotes que son fundamentales para su existencia. El 92% de los cenotes muestreados en la región muestran signos de contaminación. Los turistas frecuentemente entran al agua cubiertos de bloqueador solar y repelente de insectos. Los escurrimientos del terreno circundante contribuyen a la contaminación de los cenotes. Además, la infraestructura existente — escaleras, plataformas y barreras — se ha deteriorado o nunca fue diseñada con criterios de sostenibilidad.

Unfortunately, this creates a troubling cycle where the very tourists that support these communities can inadvertently damage the cenotes, which are crucial to their existence. 92% of the cenotes sampled in the region show signs of contamination. Tourists frequently enter the water covered in sunscreen and bug repellent. Runoff from the surrounding land contributes to the pollution of the cenotes. Additionally, existing infrastructure — stairs, platforms and barriers — has either deteriorated or was never designed with sustainability in mind.

We install rinse stations so tourists enter the water clean, and build barriers to block runoff from reaching the cenote.

We restore deteriorated infrastructure — stairs, platforms and access points — so each site can thrive.

Señalización educativa

Educational signage

Colocamos señalización para que cada visitante entienda qué son los cenotes, por qué importan y cómo protegerlos.

We put up signage so every visitor understands what cenotes are, why they matter and how to protect them.

Alux

Desarrollamos Alux, un sistema flotante de filtración impulsado por energía solar para limpiar el agua sin perturbar el ecosistema.

We are developing Alux, a floating, solar-powered filtration system that cleans cenote water without disturbing the ecosystem.

Soy Emilia Carrillo, fundadora de Xibalba Blue. Crecí en Mérida, la capital de Yucatán y la ciudad más grande del sur de México. A pesar de vivir en el corazón de una ciudad vibrante, algunos de mis recuerdos de infancia más queridos vienen de los viajes de fin de semana a los cenotes.

My name is Emilia Carrillo, founder of Xibalba Blue. I grew up in Mérida, the capital of Yucatán and the largest city in southern Mexico. Despite living in the heart of a bustling city, some of my fondest childhood memories come from weekend trips to cenotes.

De niña, flotaba sobre la superficie resplandeciente, fascinada por las profundidades que se abrían debajo de mí. Con el tiempo, al aprender el arte del buceo, me adentré en pasajes sinuosos descubriendo la magia escondida en esas aguas.

As a child, I would float on the shimmering surface, mesmerised by the depths below. With time, as I learned the art of diving, I ventured into winding passages, uncovering the magic hidden within the waters.

Sin embargo, cada año me encuentro con aguas que se sienten cada vez más ajenas. Ya no son el turquesa vibrante que recuerdo. Por eso, en 2025, fundé Xibalba Blue, nombrado así en honor al inframundo maya, al que se cree que se accede a través de los cenotes.

However, each year I encounter waters that feel increasingly unfamiliar. They are no longer the vibrant turquoise I remember. So in 2025, I founded Xibalba Blue, named after the Mayan underworld, which is believed to be accessible through cenotes.
